Science
Year 9 Science
In year 9 Science, the idea is to familiarise students with the concepts and ideas in Science. This is often with experimental procedures and use of scientific thinking.
Curriculum Level
The course is at level 4 of the NZ National Curriculum for the Science Learning Area.
Course Content full year course
This course involves:
- Nature of Science: learning to become scientifically literate
- Living world: study of plants and animals
- Planet Earth and beyond: Astronomy
- Physical world: energy, and light
- Material world: Matter and Atoms
Year 10 Science
In year 10 Science the content is more in-depth with a twist on the preparation for the senior science course. Chemistry, Physics and Biology are covered more in depth and the learning involves practicals, as well as theoretical work and investigations, are explored.

- Living world: Genetics, Adaptations and human biology
- Planet Earth and Beyond: Earth systems
- Physical world: Electricity and forces
- Material world: Acids and bases and Atoms
NCEA Level 1 Science
Level 1 science is aimed at gaining credits in the three main subject areas of Science. Physics is the first topic with an opportunity to gain credits in the first term. Chemistry is the focus for the second term and again there is a credits opportunity. The third term focus is on Biology and another credits’ opportunity. The practise exams, late in term 3 is where the strengths of the student are explored and the best chance for endorsement is taken.
