Learning Commitment: Every Learner, At Level, On Time

Our Vision for Every Learner

At Kaikohe Christian School, we believe every student is made in the image of God with unique potential. Our 2026 Strategic Plan focuses on ensuring that every learner—regardless of their starting point—is supported to achieve through a culture of acceleration, not just remediation.

Our Core Principles

  • A Biblical Worldview: We teach through a lens that helps students understand themselves and the world as part of God’s creation.
  • High Expectations: We move away from fixing the past and focus on preparing for today through acceleration.
  • Visible Learning: We use evidence-based strategies to ensure that hard work leads to measurable success.

We know your children work hard. Our commitment is to ensure that effort leads to real outcomes. Every hour in the classroom is backed by proven, evidence-based strategies—so progress is visible not just in results, but in confidence.

Strategic Learning Targets for 2026

Primary (Years 1–8)

  • Targeting 80% of students achieving at or above expected levels in Literacy and Mathematics.
  • Focused on Sequential Success—reducing the number of students below expected levels by 20% each year.
  • Ensuring steady, measurable progress for every learner.

Secondary (Years 9–13)

  • NCEA Excellence: All priority learners on a clear pathway to achieve Levels 1, 2, or 3.
  • Retention & Engagement: Maintaining 90% attendance and engagement for priority cohorts.
  • Curriculum Mastery: Years 9–10 achieving accelerated growth in Literacy and Numeracy.

How We Identify Priority Learners

  1. Diagnostic Testing: Using tools such as DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Early Literacy Skills), and Phonics Checks, to check which students may have literacy challenges. This year, 2026, we will explore Acadience Maths Assessment to identify students who may have mathematical challenges.
  2. Identifying Barriers: Analysing data to pinpoint challenges such as phonemic awareness, mathematical anxiety, or attendance.
  3. Acceleration Tracker: A live tracking system identifying each learner’s needs and the specific teaching strategies to support progress.

Actions to Accelerate Learning

1. Pre-Flight Front-loading

Short, targeted sessions before lessons introduce key concepts, enabling priority learners to enter the classroom prepared and confident.

2. Te Tūāpapa – Flexible Tiered Support

  1. Te Matua – universal
  2. Te Kahui – targeted
  3. Te Arotai – tailored

Welcome to The Ark Club

At Kaikohe Christian School, we are committed to equipping this generation to transform the world. As part of this mission, we are proud to introduce The Ark Club—a specialised programme designed for our gifted and talented primary students.

What is The Ark Club?

The Ark Club provides a dedicated learning space for students who demonstrate high-level natural abilities (giftedness) or systematically developed skills (talent). Our goal is to create an environment where these learners can perform at their peak and explore their strengths in greater depth.

The programme is supervised by Miss Lara Bell and overseen by Mrs. Trish Vesey, Head of Primary.

Meeting Diverse Learning Needs

We recognise that gifted and talented learners require adjusted pacing and specialised content to stay engaged and challenged. The Ark Club supports this through:

  • Targeted Instruction: Students are withdrawn from their regular class for approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes each week—only when core skills have already been mastered. This ensures no essential learning is missed while avoiding unnecessary repetition.
  • Specialised Focus Groups:
    • STEM Focus: Encouraging inquiry, problem-solving, and scientific discovery.
    • Art Focus: Fostering advanced creativity and artistic expression.
  • Enriched Environment: A small-group setting that prioritises student choice, creativity, and deep exploration of complex ideas.

A Partnership with Parents

We believe parents know their children best. To ensure we nurture each student’s unique passions and strengths, we invite families to share insights into their child’s interests—whether that’s hobbies, collections, or the questions that spark their curiosity.
